Giving this Whole30 a Try

I recently mentioned on social I was doing the Whole30 eating program for the month of October/November – finishing up right before Thanksgiving. If you're not familiar with how it works you can visit the official Whole30 website for a more detailed explanation. However - here is my take on it...

In the last week, I have a few people ask me if I was now doing the Whole 30 diet, if I gave up Beachbody and Shakeology, if I’m just trying another fad to lose weight…

I decide to address that in a blog post!

First…Whole30 is not a “diet” in the negative sense of the word that people say it. I didn’t start to research the Whole30 with the sole purpose of wanting to lose weight in 30 days, and then go back to eating the way that got me into trouble before. I had some unexplainable type dietary issues going on, and while looking up what could be causing this – I stumbled onto the Whole30.

What is the Whole30?

The Whole30 is a program where you strip out all foods that have a poor impact on your health, both physically and psychologically. You may not think certain food groups affect you negatively but the Whole30 adopts the belief that all sugar, grains, dairy, and legumes should be eliminated from your diet and replaced with more wholesome, natural ingredients.

Why I decided to give this a whirl

2 years ago, I decided I need to make a change in my life. I was almost 100 pounds overweight, I was exhausted all the time, couldn’t keep up with my son, and overall felt miserable. I started my health and fitness journey with the 21 Day Fix & Shakeology, and over the course of the next year, I lost almost 75 pounds! I felt amazing!! I could keep up with my son, I was sleeping better, I felt good about myself, confident in my abilities and choices, I was getting stronger mentally and physically. Then life took a twist. I was in an mentally abusive marriage. I could no longer tolerate how I was being treated. My marriage was over, I was struggling with everything I thought I knew to be true, I allowed old demons back in. I started letting too many “cheats” in, started becoming sad and depressed, physically and mentally exhausted. I no longer was feeling good, lacked motivation to exercise, I was bloated, my joints were sore, my sleeping was awful. I thought since I was still eating clean, with the exceptions of some cheats, that I was still OK. But I started realizing that it was becoming harder and harder to lose the weight I put back on, to have enough energy to give 100% to my workouts, to function in a positive mindset. A couple of months ago – I reached my breaking point and was tired of feeling tired. I forced myself to starting working out more consistently, cut back on most of the cheats. But something still wasn’t right. The weight wasn’t coming off, I still was having digestion issues, my energy was nonexistent. I was depressed, had frequent headaches, and my anxiety levels where through the roof. My seasonal allergies where hitting me harder than usual. Then one morning I woke up and an old injury I had in my knee came back with a vengeance. It was swollen, it hurt to put weight on it, I was afraid I tore something and would need surgery. I started looking up all my symptoms. In comes the Whole30.

What I was finding, is that many of the foods I was choosing to eat could be exacerbating my issues.

Are you done with Beachbody?

HELL NO!!!! I LOVE Beachbody! I’m a Beachbody Coach! Beachbody allowed me to find a passion that I never in a million years thought I would have! It gives me a voice. I love helping other people get healthy and fit – both physically and mentally. I love their workout programs, their recipes, their meal plans – and the company itself! They are truly an amazing company to be affiliated with – caring and thoughtful, looking for ways to always give back. They helped me find me – they helped me love myself for who I am no matter what size I am, and they have allowed me to be around like minded positive people! Not only do they focus on physical health, but mental health as well. They are allowing me to grow my very own business where I am the CEO, and I was able to become a certified CIZE Live instructor, I have won some amazing prizes, and was even able to go to Nashville for an amazing conference – why is the world would I ever give this up?!?! Oh and Shakeology? You will always see me drinking that nutritionally dense chocolate goodness. Every. Single. Day. It is jammed packed with the nutrients my body needs, it’s a meal I never have to worry about, and being a busy mom on the go – its extremely convenient. One of the many beauties of the Whole30 – is I can incorporate this lifestyle into my Beachbody lifestyle…Yea for me!!

Things You Should Know About My Whole30 Meal Plan

The first thing you should know is that my meal plans for the Whole30 program are basic. And when I say basic, I mean tremendously basic. I am a super busy single mom. As much I would love to spend all my time at home, cooking, baking, and running mom’s taxi service – I just don’t have that kind of time. My son plays football, he is a Jr. Firemen, a member of the Youth Council, attend Religion classes. I work full time, creating my own business from my living room, play darts, and run my son everywhere – and I’m single…so at some point I will be ready to mingle…so I certainly cannot be making these huge elaborate meals daily. And to be honest? I need to stick with a budget. I am not trying to have my grocery bill skyrocket because I want to be healthy!

I will take an hour or two on Sunday, to make a plan, shop for what I need, and then cook everything I can ahead of time. So when the day comes – I grab my meals for the day and head to work…and after a long day – dinner just needs to be heated up. I am not at a point yet mentally where I can just wing it. If I am left to wing it – I will eat nothing, or my second choice would be to grab a Quest bar. Both of which is a no no!!.

I also make extra of certain meals – so leftovers can be used at almost every lunch or a dinner. I also – have no issue with having the same thing every morning. All my meals, including dressings are Whole30 compliant and straight from the book!

If you're looking for an extravagant meal plan, this is not the plan for you. If you are a busy momma who wants to try the Whole30 without doubling their grocery bill, then you are in the right place!

And I bring you, The Busy Momma’s Whole30 Meal Plan.

I constantly browsed the Whole30 website, Pinterest, and the Whole30 book for recipes. Each week will bring on more tasty meals! Keeping checking back on this blog – I will be posting the complete recipes each week!

Whole30 Experience…so far

Headaches in the morning. Headaches in the afternoon. Headaches in the evening. If there's one thing I can tell from the first 24 hours of this program, it's that I am addicted to sugar. I didn't gorge myself on carbs or candy the night before like I wanted to and I'm glad I didn't! My head was constantly pounding the first two days, along with the most outrageous cold like experience. Coughing, sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes. Damn – I clearly need this detox! Day 3 and 4 – good thing you all weren’t around me, because I was feisty!! Day 5 – much better – but where in the world is my bed?

Cravings aren’t so awful right now, I mean – I definitely want a warm chocolate chip cookie, but Im ok…I actually expected worse!

At the end of Week 1, even though I am not supposed to weight in or measure – I am….LOL just need that small validation, and then I will be able to go the rest of the time not checking (too much LOL)

Check back next week for those results and my take on the first full week – and what will be in store for week 2!

Are you trying the Whole30? What has been your experience so far? Love/hate it? Give me all the details!
